The Schools of Magic - Merfolk in Lorwyn

The merfolk of Lorwyn, known as Merrow, are the masters of trade and travel on the plane. Combining their skill with water magic and their vast knowledge, they can be anywhere on the plane within hours. This mobility has made them a force to be reckoned with. Hit the jump to hear more about the merrow.

Merrow

The most obviously useful and impressive magic that the merrow use is known as Tideshaping. Lorwyn has no large bodies of water. Instead, there is a network of channels that crisscross the world, and these are controlled by the Merrow.
The most basic expression of this is raising the waters to change the course of the rivers, creating new channels for the Merrow to travel. This allows them to strike at their enemies from anywhere, giving them the crucial advantage of surprise. Tideshaping also contains more subtle spells, including some that produce illusions of the lands the caster wishes to see. It also can hamper enemies, either reducing their ability to attack effectively or hindering any action they would attempt to do.

While Tideshaping is a potent tool, the true strength of the Merrow lies in their Knowledge. A wise race, they are masters at gaining knowledge. Delving into the darkest depths of the water, they find secrets long hidden from the surface. However, it is not just long dead secrets they can obtain. Their mobility allows them to steal secrets from the other races, turning that knowledge against them.

However, there is a darker facet to the Merrow's mastery of knowledge. They have taken it upon themselves to control all the knowledge on the plane, destroying any information that they deem harmful. They practice this in many ways, from erasing text directly from others' books, to stripping other creatures of their memories. In combat, this knowledge makes them masters of counter magic.

With their Knowledge and mastery of Tideshaping, the Merrow can outmaneuver and outsmart any of the other races on Lorwyn. However, is this enough to overcome the trickery of the Fae? Find out tommorow!

In the meantime, I have a question for you: which is the more useful magic, Tideshaping or Thoughtweft? Leave a comment with your answer!
