Alitheia the Scholar

In ancient times, the only type of soul gem was jade, and none knew how to harness their power. They were objects of worship, only used in religious ceremonies that venerated The Walker, a mythical figure that was believed to have created life on Iroas. It took a sick young girl to unravel their secrets, and she became known as the first Paragon.

Born long before the Unification War, Alitheia was sickly and weak for most of her life. While her family always supported her without complaint, she was never satisfied as a drain on their resources. She buried herself in her studies, becoming the most knowledgeable scholar of her time, but still she was not satisfied. She was devoted to improving the lives of her family, and devoted all her time to the study of the mysterious jade soul gems, the only type of soul gem in existence at this point and used only in religious ceremonies.

In time, she learned how to create patterns out of platinum that would channel the power of the jade, resulting in the first enchanted items, though they were simple items at first, with effects that would seem trivial today. However, even this small amount of power was deemed heresy, as those in power thought she was stealing the life force of the Walker. They sentenced her to death, but failed to realize how popular she was with the common man. This led to a disastrous civil war, even though Alitheia hated bloodshed. It only ended when Alitheia surrendered herself to the will of the church.

For her act of selflessness, she was condemned to death by hanging. However, when the hangman tried to execute her, a blinding light enveloped the platform. When it faded she was gone, and the noose was transformed to copper wire with the first sapphire soul gems ever discovered. This caused a religious upheaval, and was the first known instance of someone ascending.
