The Walker

It is said that mankind was not always the dominant race on Iroas. There were other races - the aquatic psaria and the savage lykos, among others. Humans were oppressed, and there didn’t seem to be any hope for freedom. Then the Walker appeared.

Legend says that she was born and raised in a lykos slave camp, where she learned of their savage ways. Barely a woman, she managed to escape somehow and wandered the world, dismayed at the suffering her people were forced to endure.

In time, she returned to her birthplace, and found it to be even crueler than she had ever imagined, with harsher security measures implemented after her escape. In her rage, she attacked the leader of the local lykoi, managing to slay him. Inspired by her, the slaves of that camp rose up and slaughtered their captors. Thus the Walker’s army was formed.

In her quest to free her fellow humans, she followed the path that she had traveled when she first escaped, which has become known as the Pilgrim’s Path. After several years of hard fought battles, she finally reached the capital of the lykos, a dread fortress carved into the side of a mountain. All those present knew it would be impossible to capture it, and despaired at their chances for victory.

However, the final blow seemed to be dealt to their moral when the lykoi struck into their camp and kidnapped the Walker. Her followers organized a last ditch suicide attack to rescue her, but before they were able to carry out their plan the earth began to rumble. The Walker had somehow convinced the mountain to reject the lykos, unleashing its molten rage on their citadel. As the lava filled the mountain stronghold, the surviving lykoi fled, only to be confronted by the merciless blades of the Walker’s followers.

She was never seen again after that day, but her teachings formed the core of the Iroan humans religions, and the glowing jade that was found in that mountain was taken as a sign that she had ascended and was still watching over them. It is believed that she will return to Iroas when her followers are at their darkest hour.
