Commander: Damia and Skullbriar

Once again, we only have one preview on Daily MTG, though it is a legend this time. Unfortunately, I can’t find any other sites previewing legends today, so we’ll going back to the visual spoiler. So, prepare to get some wild speculation about Damia, Sage of Stone and Skullbriar, the Walking Grave.

Gorgons are surprisingly rare in Magic - only five so far, with Damia being the sixth, and she makes it so that exactly half of them are legends. My first instinct is to place her in Ravnica, home to the most memorable gorgon yet: The Sisters of Stone Death. Of course, Damia is from post-Guildpact Ravnica, so the guilds don’t exist anymore, but it is still worth it to examine the guilds that her colors encompass. The obvious one is the Golgari (Green/Black) who were once lead by the Sisters. She does have death touch, but that is mostly just because she’s a gorgon, so the Golgari aren’t a good fit for her. Then we have the Simic (Green/Blue) but again, not a great fit because she doesn’t mess with creatures a whole lot. That leaves the Dimir, and she seems perfect there, representing knowledge so ably.

Oddly enough, I would place Skullbriar in Ravnica too. His abilities fit nicely with the Golgari, and I envision him as their answer to Project Kraj. However, they underestimated how tenacious it is, and now Skullbriar rampages across the plane, dying briefly only to be reborn, strong as ever and growing ever mightier! Eventually someone will have to deal with it, or the entire world will be part of it.
