The Schools of Magic - Green, Part 1

The deepest depths of the forest contain the secrets to an ancient and powerful magic. This is the energy of growth, and it is a primal power. It is the energy of the beasts and plants, and it contains the secrets of mana.

This was originally my favorite color, and though I now I prefer Red, I still love me some Green spells. Go here to follow along, then hit the jump for an in depth look at the spells available to a Green mage!

Green

Beast: While all colors summon creatures, Green certainly has the most magic that specifically summons or enhances creatures.
Growth: This school contains all spells related to plant growth and spells that give you more mana.
Tranquility: These spells simplify the battlefield in some way. The name is somewhat misleading, as a number of these spells are horrifically violent, but they are always cast with the goal to stop things from happening. Many of the weather related spells that Green has are in this school.

Acidic Slime: This is one of those incredibly violent Tranquility spells I was talking about before. It also can target almost everything that Green offensive spells can target.
Autumn's Veil: Another Tranquility spell, this works in the opposite direction of the Acidic Slime. Instead of destroying things, this just prevents a certain type of spell from happening.
Awakener Druid: He brings trees to life, which is one of the staple Growth effects.
Back to Nature: A sort of mid-ground between the violent Acidic Slime and the defensive Autumn's Veil, this card simply silences all lingering magic, making this a good example of Tranquility magic.
Birds of Paradise: Pretty much any spell that produces mana will fall under the Growth school. The fact that it can produce any color mana means it is among the most versatile examples of Growth magic, which usually only produces Green mana.
Brindle Boar: Our first Beast spell, this one shows the full circle of life, culminating in the mage consuming it.
Cudgel Troll: Regeneration could fall under both Beast and Growth, depending on circumstances. In this case I would place it in the Beast school.
Cultivate: The flavor of this implies that the spell is used to encourage new life, meaning this is a Growth spell. Almost all the spells that search for lands belong in the Growth school.
Dryad's Favor: While most spells that enhance your creatures are part of the Beast school, this one manipulates plant life, making it a Growth spell.
Duskdale Wurm: A classic example of a powerful Beast spell, and indicative of the bluntness of the tactics employed by Beast mages.
Elvish Archdruid: This is a Growth double threat - it produces mana, and the amount of mana scales with the number of Elves you have! On that note, Elves love Growth mana.
Fauna Shaman: A good example of Beast magic, this creature helps you summon the creatures you want.
Fog: It essentially puts a stop to any fighting for the turn, making this one of the simplest Tranquility spells.
Gaea's Revenge: The sheer size of the creature and it's haste ability point this at the Beast school, while its other abilities are classic Tranquility abilities. However, this is an elemental, which are generally Growth creatures. All of this combined with how difficult it is to cast makes me think this is one of the rare spells that combines all three schools.
Garruk Wildspeaker: The iconic Green planeswalker, Garruk has the classic Green mage's set of spells. A minor Growth spell to provide him with mana, an intermediate Beast spell to provide him with creatures. Finish it off with a massive Beast ability that turns all your creatures into engines of destruction, and you have the iconic Green mage.
Garruk's Companion: Completely in the Beast school.
Garruk's Packleader: This is an interesting spell. Drawing cards is part of the Tranquility school, and it triggers off a Beast effect. We saw something similar in Black with Lilliana's Caress, but this one differs in that the Packleader is a dual school spell, combining both the Beast and Tranquility schools, whereas Lilliana's Caress only saw that Lethemancy had happened, without actually utilizing any.
Giant Growth: Rita Repulsa's favorite spell, this is pure Beast magic.
Giant Spider: This and Giant Growth are the only two spells that have been in every single coreset, so it is perhaps fitting that they are both Beast spells.
Greater Basilisk: Another Beast spell.
Hornet Sting: At first glance this could be difficult to place, but remember that the card types are made primarily for the game. In universe, this is a summoning spell, and although it only summons the hornets for a moment, it still qualifies as a Beast spell.
Hunter's Feast: This could be considered either a Beast spell, as the flavor is enjoying the rewards of the hunt, or a Growth spell, because you are healing yourself. In the end, I would say this is part of the Beast school, though please let me know if you disagree.
Leyline of Vitality: Although this is life gain, I have no reservations with deciding that this is a Beast spell.
Llanowar Elves: Possibly the first Growth spell ever made, it is the standard by which all other mana producers are judged.
Mitotic Slime: J-E-L-L-O! It's a Beast spell!
Naturalize: The base level of Tranquility spells that destroy enchantments and artifacts.
Nature's Spiral: Again, this is a relatively simple Growth spell. It's interesting to note that this spell is almost identical to some spells in Black's Necromancy school, though the flavor couldn't be more different.
Obstinate Baloth: A Beast spell, this also has one of the best names of any spell. Obstinate is a fantastic word.
Overwhelming Stampede: This is extremely similar to Garruk's ultimate ability, which should make it fairly obvious that this is a Beast spell.
Plummet: While killing fliers is normally a Tranquility effect, the flavor of this is controlling plant life, which is a Growth effect.
Primal Cocoon: Once again, creature enhancement is part of the Beast school.
Primeval Titan: Not to be outdone by his brethren, this titan is pure Growth magic.
Prized Unicorn: This is such a fine specimen of Beast magic, that everything wants to kill it. Wait, what?
Protean Hydra: An interesting application of Beast magic.
Runeclaw Bear: The baseline that all other two mana creatures are measured against, this is a Beast spell.
Sacred Wolf: It prevents your opponent from using magic on it, which is a hallmark of the Tranquility school.
Spined Wurm: I have yet to see a Wurm that is not Beast magic, and this is no exception.
Sylvan Ranger: Once again, fetching lands is Growth magic.
Wall of Vines: And yet more Growth magic.
Yavimaya Wurm: And we end on a standard example of Beast magic.

Until next time, may you know the pleasure of unleashing a massive beast on your enemies!
